Spring Blooms and Security Camera

Goodbye winter – hello spring! Hard as it is to believe, the official change of the seasons is just a few weeks away. For some parts of the country, temperatures are already heating up and daily sunlight is on the rise, meaning it’s just about time to pack away the snow shovels and start your spring cleaning.

You may be surprised to know this is also a great time to reevaluate your security strategy (which we recommend doing at least twice a year). Spring cleaning isn’t just reserved for emptying those overstuffed closets. It’s a great annual reminder to make sure your security strategy is optimized for peak performance.

87% of businesses believe the number of physical security incidents will increase or stay the same in 2024. Here are five quick tips to spruce up security and make sure those fears don’t come to fruition:

  1. All About the Light Clocks “spring forward” on Sunday, March 10th meaning more Vitamin D for all. This means the sun will rise and set an hour later, which can have major implications on physical security because thieves and vandals love working under the cover of darkness. We recommend adjusting any lighting on automatic timers to ensure they come on at the right time and you aren’t left in the dark when it matters most. And if you leverage a third-party monitoring service, make sure to update your monitoring hours as well for optimal coverage. Not sure where to start? Our illumination checklist will point you in the right direction.
  1. Beware of Blind Spots – If your surveillance cameras can’t “see” all areas of your business – you probably have blind spots. Use the extra daylight hours as a chance to walk your site and look for any areas that may be left unwatched. If blind spots exist, criminals will find a way to exploit them so now’s the time to locate and eliminate them.
  1. Reexamine Security Solutions – What worked last year may no longer be effective. Pro-Vigil’s “State of Physical Security Entering 2024” survey found that despite a quarter of businesses reporting an increase in security incidents in 2023, 53% did not change their security strategy. Even if you did make updates last year, they may no longer be sufficient. Take the time to reevaluate your current strategy and consider what technology is available on the market today to beef up defenses.
  1. Think Like a Thief – Don’ t make it easy for thieves. As you walk around reassessing your security posture, get in their state of mind! Are those pieces of equipment and tools placed too close to a fence which can easily be cut through? Does that lock on your front gate seem loose so it can easily be bypassed? If you have to question its effectiveness, it’s time to make some updates.
  2. Consult an Expert – When in doubt, reach out for help. Not sure if your surveillance cameras are pointed in the right direction or covering your entire business? Curious what additional solutions you can add on to create the ultimate layered security strategy? Experts, like the team at Pro-Vigil, have built their careers on helping businesses detect and deter suspicious behavior. Strike up a conversation before trouble pops up.
