A site survey is an on-site or virtual assessment of a property’s layout, risk factors, and existing infrastructure, conducted to design an effective camera and monitoring plan before installation begins. It typically covers where cameras need to be positioned to eliminate blind spots, what power and network infrastructure already exists or needs to be added, existing lighting conditions, and which assets or entry points carry the most risk.
A thorough site survey up front meaningfully reduces avoidable problems down the line, like poorly positioned cameras that miss the areas that matter most, masking configurations that have to be redone because a blind spot was missed initially, or coverage gaps discovered only after an incident occurs.
Of course, site survey isn’t strictly a one-time exercise. Sites change, after all; new structures go up, landscaping matures, and layouts shift, and a survey conducted at installation can become outdated well before any cameras in the system ever need replacing. Revisiting the original survey periodically, particularly after any physical change to the property, keeps the coverage plan aligned with what the site currently looks like.
