A monitored alarm system is any security setup in which alerts, whether generated by sensors, cameras, or other detection devices, are transmitted to an external monitoring center staffed by people who receive, assess, and respond to them. The core distinction from an unmonitored system is that alerts don’t simply sound locally and stop; they reach someone who can take action.
What that action looks like varies by system type and provider. Traditional alarm monitoring centers receive sensor activations and follow a set protocol, usually something like: attempt to contact the property owner, confirm whether a response is needed, and dispatch emergency services if appropriate.
The limitation of sensor-only monitoring is the absence of visual information, since decisions are made based on the fact that a sensor fired, not on what actually caused it to fire.
Video-verified monitoring adds a camera layer, allowing the monitoring agent to see what triggered the alert before deciding how to respond. This affects both accuracy – reducing unnecessary emergency dispatches – and the quality of information available to law enforcement when a genuine incident is confirmed.
Monitored alarm systems exist on a spectrum from basic sensor-and-call-list setups to fully integrated platforms combining AI-filtered camera feeds, live operator monitoring, audio deterrents, and automated law enforcement notification. The right configuration depends on the property, the risk profile, and what response capability is needed when something is detected.
