Loitering Detection

Loitering Detection

Loitering detection is an AI analytics capability that identifies when a person or vehicle remains within a defined area longer than a configured time threshold, flagging the event for operator review without requiring any other triggering behavior.

This differs from basic motion detection in that presence alone, sustained over time, is the signal, rather than movement itself. Typical applications include:

  • Flagging a vehicle parked near a loading dock or entrance for an extended period after hours
  • Identifying a person remaining near a perimeter fence line rather than passing through the area
  • Surfacing pre-incident surveillance behavior, since individuals casing a property for a future theft attempt often loiter nearby before acting

Loitering thresholds are configurable per site and per zone, since what counts as unusual dwell time varies significantly between, for example, a retail parking lot and an industrial yard after business hours.
