Perimeter security refers to the outermost layer of protection around a property, designed to deter, detect, and delay unauthorized entry before it reaches buildings, equipment, or occupied areas. It’s typically the first layer in a broader, tiered security strategy rather than a standalone solution.
A well-designed perimeter security approach layers multiple measures in sequence: physical barriers → detection → deterrence → response. Fencing, gates, and landscaping are examples of physical barriers; perimeter cameras, thermal cameras, and other sensors are key detection tools; lighting and audio act as deterrence; and monitoring with law enforcement response coordination handles anything that gets past the first three layers.
Perimeter security is particularly central to properties with large open areas and high-value exposure at the boundary itself, like construction sites, storage yards, and industrial facilities, where the goal is stopping an incident before it reaches anything of value.
