An audio deterrent is a speaker-based system that allows security personnel to broadcast spoken messages to individuals on a monitored property in real time. In a remote video monitoring context, this means a virtual guard who identifies suspicious activity can speak directly to the person or people involved – naming what they’ve observed, stating that the property is monitored, and advising the individual to leave.
The distinction between a live audio deterrent and a pre-recorded alarm is significant. Pre-recorded messages are generic, and a crook might assume that they’ve still got plenty of time to do their business and be on their way before any human being knows they’re there; a live operator can be specific, addressing what they’re actually seeing. That specificity – the knowledge that someone is watching and responding to you personally – tends to be more effective at interrupting an attempted intrusion than an impersonal siren that experienced offenders may be accustomed to.
Audio deterrents are typically one component of a tiered response, used first before escalating to other interventions such as alarm activation or law enforcement dispatch. They work best as part of a broader security setup that includes clear sightlines, adequate lighting, and established response protocols.
