PTZ is an acronym for Pan, Tilt, and Zoom – referring to a category of security camera with motorized controls that allow it to rotate horizontally, angle vertically, and adjust optical magnification. These movements can be operated manually by a monitoring professional or automated through preset patrol sequences.
In a security context, PTZ cameras are used in two primary modes:
- Patrol mode: The camera moves through a programmed sequence of positions on a schedule, providing sweeping coverage of a defined area over time
- Directed response mode: An operator takes manual control to follow a subject, investigate an area of interest, or zoom in for visual confirmation of activity identified elsewhere in the camera network
The coverage advantage of a PTZ unit is meaningful: a single camera at an elevated position can surveil an area that might otherwise require several fixed cameras to cover. The trade-off is that the camera has only one field of view at any given moment; whatever it’s pointed away from is unmonitored while it’s tracking something else.
For this reason, PTZ cameras typically complement fixed cameras within a broader system rather than replacing them. Fixed cameras provide continuous, uninterrupted zone coverage; PTZ units provide flexibility and detail when a situation requires closer attention.
