AI video analytics is the application of artificial intelligence to the analysis of video footage, enabling automated identification of objects, behaviors, and patterns rather than relying solely on human observation or basic motion triggers. It functions as an intelligence layer on top of a camera system, processing what cameras capture and surfacing information that is relevant to security decision-making.
Object classification is the most fundamental capability – that is, the ability to distinguish between categories of things in frame. An AI analytics-powered system can distinguish between:
- People, including individuals, groups, and changes in crowd density
- Vehicles by type, from passenger cars to commercial trucks
- Animals, which account for a significant share of overnight motion events on commercial properties
- Environmental movement such as wind-blown debris or shifting shadows
Behavioral analysis adds another layer, identifying patterns of movement or activity that may warrant attention regardless of what is triggering them – someone lingering in a defined area beyond a normal threshold, movement along a perimeter fence in an unusual pattern, or an object left stationary somewhere it doesn’t belong.
AI video analytics doesn’t make security decisions. It identifies and prioritizes information, reducing the volume of irrelevant data that reaches human operators so that human judgment can be applied where it actually matters.
